Adult BJJ Program

What to expect for your first class

Introductory BJJ Class

Starting at a new gym can be an intimidating experience, especially when you are trying a new sport that you may not know much about. At MNBJJ Burlington, we pride ourselves on making your first class a warm and inviting experience. You will be personally welcomed and taught by one of our high level coaches.  You will be taken aside where you will be taught the basics of Jiu-Jitsu. You will learn BJJ warm-up, how to fall safely and confidently on the mats (this is known as “break falling”), move technically on the mats and finally how to stand up in a BJJ stance. Throughout your introductory class, your professor will teach you BJJ terminology, and speak to you about the “art of jiu-jitsu” and the “BJJ lifestyle”. We will answer any questions you might have and many questions you did not even know you had. By the end of your introductory class, you will already feel part of the MNBJJ family and we hope you catch the passion and excitement that is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu!

Common Questions:

What should I wear?

For your first class wear workout clothes (Shorts or tights and a T-shirt or rash guard). For the remainder of your Free Week Trial, you will be given a uniform to borrow for the class, which is washed after every use. Once you decide to sign a membership you will be able to purchase a uniform and belt from our academy.

Do I need to be physically fit?

BJJ will help you become fitter than you ever have been. Every student starts at their own pace and with consistency, they quickly realize the physical benefits of BJJ. BJJ is unlike any sport you have tried. Each class will help develop your cardiovascular strength, flexibility, coordination and core strength. Our coaches will help you realize your goals safely.

What is BJJ?

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is known as “the gentle art”. It is a grappling-based martial art whose central theme is the skill of controlling a resisting opponent in ways that force him to submit. Much of the technique in BJJ is centred on taking an opponent to the ground and utilizing superior leverage, grip and position upon your opponent. One of the keynotes of BJJ is the ability of technique and focus to overcome size, strength and aggression. This is why BJJ is considered one of the most practical forms of self-defense on the planet. BJJ will teach you how to control someone without getting hurt, or having to hurt them.

I am a female, is BJJ right for me?

We passionately believe that BJJ is the best martial art for females to learn. From a self-defense perspective alone, BJJ will teach you how to use technique and leverage to overcome strength and size. BJJ does not use kicks and punches, which minimizes the risk of injury both to you and your opponent. If a woman is going to be attacked, there is almost a 100% chance that she will be attacked by a man, as a result, we strongly believe that when training, it is crucial that women spar with men as well as women. By doing so, if they are ever attacked by a man, they will be familiar with how that feels and how to overcome strength and size to fend off their attacker and get to safety. At MNunes BJJ Burlington, we foster an atmosphere of respect and family and have a zero-tolerance policy for any type of misconduct or abuse. We have numerous women who take part in our programs and have achieved incredible physical, mental and emotional goals. You will be made to feel comfortable, respected and welcomed!
